While they were always competitors, one incident in particular tuned their rivalry into a full-blown feud. Unfortunately, it all happened over a massive misunderstanding. <br><br><br>How RDR2's Gray &amp; Braithwaite Feud Began <br><br><br><br><br><br>The Grays originated as British Loyalists in Scotland, who snitched on Jacobite supporters during the 1745 uprising. The family eventually uprooted and moved to North America a year later. Their lives were under threat after Jacobites began hunting down and taking revenge on British informants, so when they eventually made their home in Scarlett Meadows in 1957 the family lied about their past and made it appear as though they had been pro-Jacobite during the conflict. The Grays eventually found financial success in the slave trade by mass-producing cotton and tobacco. <br><br><br>The Braithwaite family didn’t immigrate to America until 1779, a full two decades behind the Grays. The clan originated in England, though it’s unclear why they eventually moved overseas. Nevertheless, within a few decades, the Braithwaites established an equally productive slave plantation, making them one of the most powerful families in the region, similar to the Grays. The abolitionists (or anti-slave) movement stood to hurt profits for both the Braithwaite and Gray families. Even though they were rivals in businesses, they attempted to join forces at the onset of the movement in order to mitigate its repercussions. <br><br><br><br><br><br>However, this was ultimately the beginning of their long-standing feud. In 1806, Lucille Braithwaite told Douglas Gray the location of a significant sum of gold. She also gave him permission to take the gold in order to fund abolitionist groups. After a massive gunfight in which the gang appears to kill all of the Braithwaites, they find the matriarch, Catherine, hidden away upstairs. She eventually admits to giving John's son to Angelo Bronte. Before Arthur and his comrades set out to Saint Denis to look for the boy, they set fire to the Braithwaite manor. Catharine then shockingly runs back into the building, ultimately to her death. <br><br><br>This appears to be the end of the Braithwaite and Gray feud… until Arthur receives a letter from Penelope asking him to help her get to the Rhodes train station. She and Beau plan to take the train to Boston to elope. It remains unclear where Penelope was during the attack on Braithwaite manor or if any of her family survived. Even stranger, it's also unclear why she chooses to reach out to Arthur Morgan , considering he and his friends are responsible for the death of her entire family. <br><br><br>The trio runs into a bit of trouble at the train station when Beau’s cousins attempt to stop them, though Arthur is able to save the day. They finally stop at Riggs station, and Penelope and Beau opt to take a stagecoach to Boston It’s presumed the pair get married as they had planned, and finally bring an end to the Braithwaite-Gray feud.
