Shear Rate’s Critical Role In Polymer Melt Integrity

From MU BK Wiki

The quality of a polymer melt is heavily influenced by the shear rate applied during processing. Shear rate refers to the speed at which layers of the polymer flow past one another, and it plays a pivotal role in defining the final properties of the molded or extruded product. At low shear rates, the polymer chains have sufficient time to relax and align slowly, which can lead to non-uniform motion and low consistency. This often results in surface defects such as sharkskin or melt fracture, especially in high molecular weight polymers.

As the shear rate rises, the polymer chains begin to orient along the flow, which can boost the uniformity of the melt and lower viscosity. This non-Newtonian response is beneficial in many processing applications because it allows the material to flow more easily through dies and molds without requiring excessive pressure. However, if the shear rate becomes excessive, the polymer chains can be mechanically damaged or even degraded. This leads to molecular weight reduction, which diminishes the mechanical properties of the final product.

Excessive shear can also produce concentrated thermal energy due to molecular resistance, causing thermal degradation in heat-sensitive polymers. This can result in yellowing, foul emissions, or the generation of volatile byproducts that damage product integrity. In addition, high shear rates may cause uneven flow patterns, leading to built-up tension that appear as warping or dimensional instability after cooling.

To achieve optimal melt quality, processors must carefully balance the shear rate with the polymer’s rheological properties, thermal setting, and machine configuration. Using the optimal screw geometry, zoned heating settings, تولید کننده گرانول بازیافتی and die design helps ensure a consistent and moderate shear rate throughout the process. Measuring and adjusting shear rate ensures that the polymer melt remains uniform, consistent, and undamaged, ultimately producing parts with uniform quality and flawless appearance.
